Exceptional Eyelid Surgery Background

Finding Lasting Relief

Constantly watering eyes can be incredibly frustrating, getting in the way of everyday tasks like reading, driving, or simply socialising. For me, medical care is really all about the patients, not about me or my surgical ego. I want you to feel listened to and understood, so I can find out exactly what is bothering you and what you would like improved.

My first priority is to give you a safe space where your concerns are genuinely validated. We will look past the symptoms to find the root cause, ensuring that any treatment plan we create together is entirely focused on your comfort and well-being.

As an Ophthalmologist and triple-fellowship trained Oculoplastic Surgeon, my clinical focus includes the delicate tear drainage pathways of the face. An accurate diagnosis is absolutely vital, as only a small proportion of watery eyes is actually caused by a blocked tear duct. We will conduct a thorough evaluation to see if you are a candidate for Endonasal Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR).

Endonasal DCR is a minimally invasive technique designed to bypass a blockage and restore normal tear drainage from inside the nose. We will openly discuss what this involves and what you can expect, ensuring you feel completely confident before making any choices. We will only move forward when you feel entirely ready and fully supported.

"True care means truly listening to what is bothering you, so we can find the right solution for your comfort."

Your Questions Answered

Understanding Endonasal DCR

An accurate diagnosis is the most important first step. Because only a relatively small number of watery eyes are caused by a physical blockage in the tear duct, we need to be absolutely certain before recommending surgery.

During your consultation, I will conduct a comprehensive evaluation. This includes reviewing your medical history and performing specific tests, such as gently syringing the lacrimal sac. We may also use imaging studies to confirm a narrowing or obstruction in the nasolacrimal system. This careful, individualised assessment ensures that Endonasal DCR is truly the right solution for your specific needs.

Preparation is straightforward, and our team will guide you through every step. You will need to provide us with a complete list of your current medications, any allergies, and relevant medical history.

I will give you detailed instructions on how to prepare in the days leading up to your surgery. This includes fasting requirements and guidelines on managing your usual medications. It is particularly important that any blood-thinning medications are paused prior to surgery, and we will coordinate exactly when and how to do this safely.

Before Surgery: You will be admitted to a private room on a day surgery ward. I will come and see you to answer any final questions and ensure you are comfortable. The nursing staff will take excellent care of you as the anaesthesia is administered.

During Surgery: The procedure takes about 45 to 90 minutes. Using a tiny endoscopic camera and specialised instruments, I access the blocked tear drainage pathway entirely through your nasal cavity. This allows for precise repair without making any incisions on your face.

After Surgery: You will be monitored closely in the recovery area until you are alert and comfortable. Some temporary nasal congestion or mild swelling is normal and will settle down. We will provide you with pain relief, instructions for nasal irrigation, and clear post-operative care guidelines before you head home.

The main benefit of the endonasal approach compared to traditional external DCR is the lack of visible facial scarring. It also generally offers a shorter recovery time and a lower risk of certain complications, allowing you to get back to a more comfortable quality of life.

However, all surgeries carry some level of risk. While generally very safe and highly successful, potential risks include bleeding, infection, and the formation of scar tissue or adhesions inside the nose. Persistent tearing can occasionally occur if the new pathway narrows, and rare complications include nasal crusting or a perforation of the nasal septum. We will discuss all of this openly during your consultation so you can make a fully informed decision.
